Ahhhh SF City… Soo much to do not enough time!!!! We Spent a day in the San Francisco and visited 1am gallery, Pier 39, The Aquarium, got Dessert, and spent the night at the Good Hotel…

1AM, in collaboration with artists, Optimist and Plantrees, are proud to present “The Truck Show SF”. The exhibit pays homage to the modern box-style delivery truck as an icon of graffiti and also is a charity event to benefitVisual Element, the public arts component of Oakland’s EastSide Art Alliance. Optimist and Plantrees have put together a killer line-up of artists, including infamous Bay Area graffiti writers like Satyr, Jurne and Pemex that have agreed to donate 100% of their proceeds to Visual Element. The organizers of “The Truck Show SF” hope to show that the graffiti writer’s love and respect for the art form is a powerful tool to help fuel and positively influence the next generation by giving back to their community even in a time of financial struggle. The opening reception is on Friday, February 10^th, 2012 from 6:30 to 9:30pm and will run through March 4^th, 2012.

The modern box-style delivery truck lives in the inner cities all across America. For the modern day graffiti writer it is a contemporary relative to the subway cars of the 70’s and 80’s, which helped spark the explosion of graffiti. In a state of eminent relocation, they assemble a disjointed gallery of ceaseless unrest, a perfect canvas for any opportunistic graffiti artist. In an attempt to keep trucks looking new, many owners will opt to give a graffiti writer permission to assume control over these plots of valuable real estate in the urban landscape.

Visual Element is the only intensive “Urban Graffiti Arts” program in East Oakland serving high school youth. The class facilitates the production of walls through their engagement with local property owners and the community. Students are trained to be responsible artists by learning a variety of visual arts skills including mural production, digital photography and graphic design.Visual Element creates a sustainable cycle and public art projects, which send the message that productive and self-sufficient youth can contribute positive change to their neighborhoods.

The organizers of “The Truck Show SF” are excited to partner with Visual Element. We both believe that murals educate, motivate to action, and inspire more creations of beauty. With a wide price range of artwork for sale, everyone interested will be able to take home a piece of graffiti history and support an important cause.

Aquarium of the Bay is San Francisco Bay’s Aquarium. We are passionate about providing fun and unforgettable encounters with our natural world in ways that ignite both wonder and conservation. We do this from our 50,000 square foot building at the heart of San Francisco’s history and culture. We are nestled in the shadow of Coit Tower and Telegraph Hill on Fisherman’s Wharf at PIER 39, along the City’s “Walkable Waterfront

Their focus on water, beginning at the heart — the very depths—of San Francisco Bay. Their facility boasts 300 feet of crystal clear acrylic tunnels holding 700,000 gallons of carefully maintained bay water that sustains approximately 20,000 animals, from octopuses to eight-foot native, sevengill sharks. Visitors are also treated to mesmerizing walls of jellies and a chance to touch bat rays, skates and “splash zone” animals.

Ahhhhh, do you feel the anti love in the air… I love/hate this day…. Not because I dont have a valentine…. I just think its a stupid Hallmark holiday… A day of spending money on dinner,candy,movie and if your lucky a hotel. If anything, you should be doing all that on the first/second date or on your anniversary. Just my thoughts….. Here @594 we like to spend this day by showing love to public property…. Cant really get into details with that but Im sure you catch my drift!!!

The biggest talk around the world is how facebook is going public, and how the companies worth is billions and how Mark Zucchini(I think thats his last name) is a worth in the multi billions and is only requesting for an annual salary of $1 a year….. I’m Over all that… What blows my mind is Mr. David Choe Becomes a Multi Millionaire ….. WTF!!!!

The idea that all street artists are impoverished souls eking out an existence for the love of their craft is a passé and somewhat naive notion in our age of Banksy, Shepard Fairey and other creative types who have parlayed their underground success into lucrative businesses.

We might soon be able to add to their ranks artist David Choe, who has created a number of murals for Facebook headquarters. The L.A. street and graffiti artist could stand to earn upward of $200 million from Facebook’s initial public offering, according to recent reports. That kind of money would no doubt make even Jeff Koons or Damien Hirst envious.

There are now close to two billion people who use the internet for information, entertainment, shopping, and networking socially for fun or work. Of the two billion who surf the web, 1 in 4 people have a Facebook account and while you could probably guess that, you wouldn’t guess that the company would be offered $5 Billion as their initial entry into the stock market. Some people, like artist David Choe got on the Facebook stock train early.

The graffiti artist took stock credits to create artwork for the Facebook headquarters and now that the company is going public, his meager 0.1 % – 0.25% stake in the company is now valued at around $200 Million. That’s quite a bit of money for a street artist who initially thought the idea of Facebook was pointless. Choe has since become a successful artist with his works being displayed at museums and galleries, so maybe doing a favor for stock options is what more of us should try. Just saying.

As reported in The Times, Choe was asked to create murals for Facebook’s former headquarters in Palo Alto in 2005 by the company’s founding president, Sean Parker. Two years later, the artist was asked by CEO Mark Zuckerberg to create more artwork.

The company’s current headquarters in Menlo Park also bears the graffiti stamp of Choe, who created a large-scale blue mural in the lobby of one building, as well as other works.

The New York Times reported last week that Choe was compensated for his work with shares of Facebook. The artist’s compensation is valued at about $200 million, according to knowledgeable people interviewed by the newspaper.

Maybe he’ll finally feature on our line for free….

Buff Monster buffs the Standard Hotel

Buff Monster recently painted the wall outside of the downtown Standard Hotel and here’s what he had to say about it:

I first worked with The Standard back in 2006 I believe, when I did an installation at the Hollywood location. They didn’t have this wall Downtown back then. Anyway, I drew a little sketch, packed up my trusty Scion xB, called Tim to come down and help me, called Dan from 33third to do video (33third.com sells spray paint, and you’ll get 10% off your order by entering code BUFFMONSTER). I called some friends in the media, and got to work. I spent two days working on the wall and I’m really happy with how it turned out. My dad, who is facing 24 years in federal prison, even came by to help paint (More on my dad, and progress photos of the wall, on Rob’s post on The Hundreds). The Standard even made a signature Buff Monster dessert which will be on the menu until my wall comes down (towards the end of Feb).
